Research

When one thinks of sustainability within the business context, the focus is generally on large corporates.  A fair amount of emphasis is placed on the power of corporates to drive more sustainable practices within the supply chain.  However, very little research exists that provides insight into the implications of these ‘forced’ practices on small and medium sized business.  There is also limited insight into how smaller businesses are voluntarily responding to the demands of sustainability.

Catalysed by the request to write a chapter on the implications of sustainability for small and medium sized business for a new book, The Moss Group initiated a piece of research into this particular topic.

The research explores how SMEs view the issue of sustainability in its broadest context and considers the various strategies and approaches followed in terms of integrating sustainability thinking into their businesses.  We are also gaining insight into the drivers behind SMEs adopting sustainable business practices as well as the economic impacts of these practices.

We are covering a wide spectrum of sectors, from primary production through to professional services and are including an array of businesses from micro enterprises through to businesses with just under 300 employees.

The initial round of field research will draw to a close in late August, with the preliminary results becoming available in October.
